The classic layering workshop updated! Explore the fundamentals of layered patterning, generated through dyeing and printing. Dunnewold will share her revised approaches to immersion dyeing, and the replacement of discharge (color removal) processes with a variety of water-based resists. There will be an emphasis on tool making, and decorative finishing techniques, including foiling and metal leafing. Perfect for the beginning surface design artist or for more experienced folks interested in advanced layering.

This workshop is for the K-5 classroom teacher who is faced with teaching art. Monoprinting is perfect for the classroom with easy set-up and clean-up with wonderful results. Try your hand at printmaking. In this highly intuitive and fun class, you will discover the joy of painting on plexiglass and hand printing. Lesson plans are not included, but easily can be created from the experiences of the day.

Explore several methods of making painterly, non-literal images in-camera -- camera movement, multiple-exposure montaging, Lensbaby, long exposures and shooting reflections. Shooting at a lavender farm, area gardens, forests and coastal areas, learn what makes the best impressionistic images. YouÕll develop your own artistic vision as you translate feelings into pixels. One-on-one instruction, image reviews and demonstrations. All formats welcome. Working knowledge of your equipment and basic image-editing software experience is suggested.

This workshop will focus on building a strong foundation for painting through structure, form, composition, color and many other elements. Wang will guide students in seeing and analyzing painting. Students will also learn the importance of embracing their own inspirations and feelings toward the subject matter, and how to translate the first feeling onto the canvas. On the first day, students will focus on drawing skills, and then move on to painting the portrait head. By the end of the week, students will paint a ¾-length portrait. Individual instruction and a class critique will be offered.

This workshop is a unique opportunity for Advanced Photographers. In Sam Abell's 10th anniversary workshop at the Pacific NorthWest Art School, students will participate in creating Sam's unique and exciting book: 'Assignment Whidbey.' The intent is for students and Sam to capture the essence of Whidbey during the week long workshop. Sam will work with students individually and in group settings. Participation in the workshop is contingent upon a review of the student's work. To register please submit a portfolio of at least ten images along with a short letter describing why you believe you are a good fit for this 'Assignment Whidbey.' The Pacific NorthWest Art School, in partnership with the Whidbey Island Arts Council, presents an evening lecture and presentation by internationally acclaimed National Geographic photographer Sam Abell on Tuesday, August 17th, 7:00 p.m., at the Performing Arts Center, Coupeville High School. Renowned for his legendary 31-year career as a National Geographic photographer (1970-2001), Abell comes to the Pacific Northwest to share his unique perspective and philosophy on photography. In this workshop, students will explore techniques of glazing, layering, and adding collage elements, as well as paint, to build surface textures. Interesting and dramatic effects can be achieved. Emphasis will be on experimentation and design.

Using a clothed model for inspiration, our first two days will stress bold composition and strong design through shape, texture, space and line. Later, we will explore abstraction, emphasize Òthe process,' and concentrate on composing the entire page. There will be frequent mini-demonstrations and class critiques. Each participant's preferences, originality and creativity will be honored, and there will be as much one-on-one time as possible. All water media (watercolors, acrylics, H2Oils) and artists of all levels are welcome.

Focusing on the plein-air painterÕs ability to sketch and paint quickly, Joe will show students that most learning happens in the beginning stages of a painting, regardless of subject matter. Joe will demonstrate in 20-minute sketches how to capture the vitals of a scene while leaving the details for later. Then he will work with students encouraging them to do the same. Students will fill a sketchbook with small paintings for future reference. Notes are added to sketches for clarification and reminders of light, mood, and other factors. Additionally, students will complete a minimum of six to ten paintings during the workshop.

British photojournalist and humanitarian Lee Karen Stow will offer a one-day workshop. This inspiring workshop will explore the long-term documentary pohotography project with all its emotional highs and lows, building up trust with one's subject, and the relentless search for funding and ways to exhibit work. Lee will demonstrate her techniques for taking better images, from the heart.

Lee Karen Stow is a one-woman phenomenon who has devoted the past four years to bringing to the worlds' attention the plight of women and children in Sierra Leone. Proceeds from this workshop will directly benefit the women of Sierra Leone. Take Lee's workshop and change a life! Dye the color you choose, not the color that chooses you! Explore the unlimited number of hues possible by mixing only pure reds, yellows, and blues of Procion MX dye. Teams of students will use different sets of primaries that when mixed will yield hundreds of colors in a wide range of values. Sharing the results, each student will build a sample book of more than 1,000 dye formulas on 100% cotton fabric. This book will become an invaluable reference for future dyeing, both systematic and freeform. Using the sample book as a guide, each student will apply the basic techniques of dyeing, including dyeing value gradations, over-dyeing, and low water immersion techniques in further explorations

Various techniques (under-painting, layering, thickened dye, spray finishing, foiling) will create richness of color plus the textures of manipulated dye. We will work with traditional gutta resist lines, as well as stippled gutta for unusual effects. Good composition is always a focus. With a sense of play plus genuine encouragement, each person is supported to find their own unique voice on silk.

In general students should have prior silk painting experience, however, a limited number of students without much prior experience will be allowed to join the class.

Whether you are an accomplished oil painter, an avid watercolorist, a traditional acrylic painter, or an aspiring artist who has never painted before, fluid acrylics will offer a new and forgiving way to paint. Discover this versatile and playful medium that will offer you numerous opportunities to create luminous, transparent paintings layered with color and infused with rich tactile surfaces. You will learn basic techniques, and move into working with color, textured surfaces, and layering. You will also discover new approaches to creating abstract and transitional landscapes and seascapes.

Students will be layering the techniques Shannon uses to create her own large scale contemporary wall hangings. Screen printing, ancient Rozome (Japanese wax resist dying),strip piecing, ghost printing and embellishing on silk are combined through multiple layers to create intriguing works of depth and detail. Students will be stewarded through the layering process in a loose and playful way to familiarize them with the techniques and possibilities.

Plant based dyes bring a fresh palette to contemporary textile arts. The dyes to be explored in this workshop include yellows (Osage, fustic and weld); a brilliant range of reds from coveted colors such as cochineal, lac and madder; purples and greys from logwood as well as walnut and cutch for rich tonal browns. During the workshop many techniques will be explored including brushwork, silk screening and printing with special antique wood blocks, as well as natural discharge printing and painting using both thickened and watery techniques. Indigo will be introduced for overdyeing textiles which have been resisted with simple stitching and clamp & fold techniques. The final step will include the application of pure metallics including silver, gold and copper leaf and a range of metallic Setacolor pigments. Participants will be working with a selection of special hand woven silk and cotton gauze scarves, as well as shawls from Africa, India, SE Asia, and linen from Eastern Europe.
